A sign that said “Roman Villa”

I’m driving along doing 50 and saw a sign that said Roman Villa. I made a quick decision and took a left turn and I am happy I did.

What many Americans may not know is that the Roman Emperor Claudius invaded Britain in AD 43. Britain was a part of the Roman Empire for over three centuries! They settled in certain locations and built bath houses and villas. today I found one.

I couldn’t believe it. It is one of the most elaborate villas discovered in Britain. The Romans loved baths and spending money on their homes for entertaining.

If you look closely, you can see the mosaics under my feet. The walls were not preserved. The National Trust built around the floors.

The baths…absolutely spectacular. This was a social gathering place. Men separate from woman. I wonder what they discussed. Who won first pick in the draft? Why don’t we do this anymore?
